6. Stowe, VT — what says "fall romance" more than a weekend in Vermont?
Stowe in fall is a magical experience. The foliage peaks early in October in the north and later in the south, and what budding relationship wouldn't be helped along by spending a few warm days and cool nights together in a place that's world-renowned for its skiing? and a host of lodging options. Foliage-watching is usually good through October in this region.

There's a large variety of inns and B&Bs to choose from in Vermont — especially in Stowe, which seems to cater to folks particularly interested in making the most of the foliage and ski seasons. Some top choices include the Stowe Inn & Tavern, Stone Hill Inn, and Riverside Inn.

For romantic places to dine, try the audaciously titled (yet delicious!) Whip Bar & Grill, the Blue Moon, or the Stoweflake Mountain Resort & Spa.

7. Malibu, CA — unleash your inner beach bums together at a sexy, sophisticated oceanfront retreat
Imagine this: You and your new honey are busy workers by day who morph into casual beach bums each weekend, surfing into your new romance together in one of the most beautiful coastal spots in the world. Sounds good, right? Then pack your shorts and t-shirts (and maybe something casual-yet-dressy for a romantic dinner out) and head down the famed Pacific Coast Highway about 20 miles due north of Los Angeles.

You hear about Malibu all the time, since its history includes serving as a secluded, exclusive colony to nearby Hollywood's movie stars in the 1920s. But while it does have an idyllic, small-town feel (despite being so close to the "megalopolis" that is Los Angeles), it's open to all visitors. Things to do here include walks on the beach, dinners overlooking the moonlit water, watching breathtaking sunsets, and enjoying a hike amongst the hills set back from the road a few miles. What better way to leave the cares of the world behind you and focus on each other? Fall is a perfect time to be near the Pacific. Autumn's not too late for a sophisticated beach getaway when the weather is as perfect as it is in Malibu!

For a perfect weekend, stay at the Malibu Beach Inn, dine at Geoffrey's overlooking the water, hike the wildflower-filled trails of Zuma Beach (which lies adjacent to Malibu), and for a little culture, visit The Getty Villa to check out the dramatic antiquities and Roman-inspired architecture and gardens.

8. Key West, FL — let the legendary sunsets work their magic on you
Kick back in the Florida Keys for a romantic idyll that will make you feel like you stepped back in time to the days when Key West captured the imaginations of such writers as Ernest Hemingway and Tennessee Williams. With a fall season that's traditionally been full of balmy weather, sunny skies, laid-back hot spots and plenty of romantic places to stay, this scenic archipelago will likely do the same for you and your new love.

Key West's residents run on Key West time, which is a markedly slower pace that allows plenty of time for you to really get to know each other. The water temperature's cool enough to wake up your senses, though, and there are many opportunities for enjoying some adventurous parasailing and boat trips. And if you're looking for other

fun couples' activities to try here in the fall, check out the annual Goombay Festival, during which Key West's Bahama Village residents throws a street festival with food, arts and crafts, non-stop live entertainment and dancing in the streets; or you might prefer the sexy-sounding Fantasy Fest, a 10-day costuming and masking celebration that sounds like a cross between Mardi Gras and Halloween.

But of course, the archipelago's gorgeous, legendary sunsets are the primary draw that consistently brings couples in search of a romantic interlude. For the area's best romantic eateries, try Pisces, Louie's Backyard, and Azur.

9. Shelter Island, NY — the most secluded hideaway within two hours of New York City
Shelter Island is accessible only by ferry from one of two towns in Long Island. Known for its romantic inns and B&Bs, morning mists, gardens, and restored Victorian homes on steep, winding roads, it's a place where you can connect with each other while being surrounded by nature and the water. Nearly one-third of the island is owned by the Nature Conservancy and kept in a forever-wild state. And with miles of coastline, half a dozen beaches, and three deep-water harbors, Shelter Island provides romance by the sea everywhere you look.

While it might just be a short trip away from the bustle of Manhattan, taking the ferry to Long Island's Shelter Island signals to couples that this magical place will help them forget the day-to-day craziness of life and truly get away from it all. And isn't that the goal of any romantic rendezvous? No wonder it's such a popular destination for weddings and honeymoons!

Some of the best places for couples to stay include The Chequit Inn, the House on Chase Creek, and Sunset Beach — a relatively new, stylish and sexy hideaway hotel overlooking the water that offers a wide variety of activities for couples, including riding jet skis, sailing, volleyball and yoga. For romantic Shelter Island eateries, try Bella Vita, The Dory, Vine Street Café, and the Pridwin.

10. Austin, TX — kick back and relax together in this laid-back but vibrant capital city
Austin surprises many couples. Set in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, it's anything but a dry Texas prairie, that's for sure! With its trail-filled Zilker Metropolitan Park and Botanical Garden, Lake Travis, Nature & Science Center, and wealth of great restaurants, this artsy town also has one of the liveliest popular music scenes in the country. Austin's got a young, hip vibe that makes it a perfect getaway for couples looking to get away from it all with a background of excitement to fill their days and nights.

For a romantic Austin getaway, the luxurious Lake Austin Spa and Resort (named the #1 destination spa in North America by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler in 2010) is a perfect place for fanning the flame of a new romance — or recharge an old one. Great places to enjoy a meal out include Jeffrey's of Austin, Chez Zee and Chez Nous, which has been a beloved Austin icon since 1982.
