Yes, He Has A Biological Clock!

A new book claims that women aren’t the only ones who should be hearing that ticking sound—and rushing to settle down. Men should, too. Here’s why.

e’ve all heard that women have biological clocks—a fact that drives many to feel they need to hurry up, get hitched and have kids. And while guys generally feel as if they don’t need to rush, a groundbreaking new book claims that their ability to procreate may wind down much faster than previously believed.

According to The Male Biological Clock: The Startling News About Aging, Sexuality, and Fertility in Men, men older than 35 are twice as likely to be infertile as men 25 and

younger. And if that isn’t enough to get guys worried, consider the fact that roughly 10 percent of men trying to father a child are either infertile or what’s know as subfertile (meaning below average in that arena). This means men are equally as likely as women to be responsible for conception troubles.

“Infertility isn’t just a woman’s problem,” says author Harry Fisch, M.D., Director of the Male Reproductive Center at Columbia University Medical Center. As for all those famous “old dads” out there—writer Saul Bellow had a kid at 85, actor Tony Randall at 72—Fisch says they’re the exception rather than the rule.

What does this mean for all the men out there who dream of having a family someday, far off in the future? They might want to speed up their timetable for finding The One. Says Fisch, “Research shows that men need to care about this.”
