ave you ever been tempted to ask your date over dinner—or under the covers, for that matter—that key question, “How many people have you slept with anyway?” Asking, of course, can be awkward for some people. If you’re among their ranks and are still dying to figure out the ballpark your sweetie is in, a new study led by Daniel Nettle of Newcastle University could help.

After surveying 425 men and women, he found a strong link between their profession and the number of sexual partners a person has had. Doctors, lawyers, and other business-y types,
Doctors, lawyers, and other business-y types have had sex with fewer partners than people in creative fields.
he determined, have gotten it on with three people on average. People in more creative fields—writing, music, or the arts—have shagged anywhere from four to ten…or more.

The reason for this difference, says Nettle, is a bit of a no-brainer: "Creative types tend to act on more sexual impulses and opportunities, often purely for experience's sake, than the average person would,” he explains. Of course, that doesn’t mean that every person who dabbles in watercolors, is writing a novel, or works in advertising is indulging in some bed-hopping. The actual number will vary from individual to individual. And remember, if having the study’s general guideline doesn’t resolve your wondering, there’s that other technique you can use to find out how many partners your date has had…summon your courage and ask.
